Brussels began as a sleepy village in the 10th century and flourished over
time, building an impressive La Grand-Place that served as a hub of commerce and government for Belgium. It has
retained its charming 19th century allure even while becoming one of the
busiest metropolitan hubs in Europe. When it was chosen in the 1990s as the center of government for the
European Union, the city underwent a transformation, as hundreds of new
buildings grew up to accommodate the new bureaucracy. International
corporations moved in, building modern skyscrapers and updating the city's
previous, somewhat provincial feel. Today, Brussels is an international seat of politics and business, and is
home to 1.8 million residents. Since gaining independence in 1830, Belgium
has shifted from its traditional Dutch roots, and now French is the primary
language. As a modern European capital, there are hotels in Brussels for
every budget and comfort level. beautiful tribute to the genre, with thousands of original cartoon works, a
library, and an Art Nouveau brasserie for a leisurely afternoon snack. Mannekin-Pis, the city's iconic statue of a tinkling boy, is a favorite
with tourists and residents alike. The statue and fountain was originally a
functional element in the city's water distribution system, but is now a
symbol of the city's rebellious spirit. The city owns about 900 different
outfits for the statue; during festivals and other special events, it is
decked out in clever clothes to suit the occasion. Hike through the deep green forest at the Foret de Soignes and visit the
site of the Battle of Waterloo. The city re-enacts this historic 1815
battle on its June anniversary every five years. Climb the Lion Mound for a
spectacular panorama of the battleground.
