Visiting Melbourne – A City Guide

Cosmopolitan Melbourne has been voted the world’s most liveable city, home to world-class museums and restaurants, a thriving café culture, and iconic sporting events. The city is made for exploring, whether you shop vintage boutiques in the arty Fitzroy neighborhood, or search for the perfect cocktail in the city’s hidden laneways – narrow alleys tagged with street art, packed with cafés, bars, and shops.  Families make the pilgrimage to the classically kitschy Luna Park amusement center, and beyond the city a string of beaches punctuates a stunning coastal drive.

Melbourne’s city layout

Melbourne sits on the Yarra River, off Port Phillip Bay on Victoria’s southern coast. The Central Business District (CBD) hugs the river’s north side. Here, you’ll find the greatest concentration of Melbourne CBD hotels, and restaurants and bars buzzing day and night. The architecture evokes old-world Europe, with landmarks that include the copper-domed Flinders Street Railway Station and InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto, housed in a 19th-century Venetian gothic building.

Melbourne attractions

IHG® Rewards Club members benefit from exclusive rates to all of our hotels; stay at one of three centrally located Melbourne hotels and you’ll be steps from the free City Circle Tram that loops through the CBD. Hop on and off to visit such popular attractions  as SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, Old Melbourne Gaol and Melbourne Museum.

Locals and visitors alike love the Queen Victoria Market. This huge, two-block bazaar, just north of the city center, is Australia’s largest open-air market, selling fresh produce, gourmet foods, handcrafts and more.

If you crave natural peace and quiet, head to the south bank of the Yarra. At the Royal Botanic Gardens you can admire their world-renowned camellia collection, punt on Ornamental Lake, or hike along the serene Fern Gully under a towering canopy of tree ferns.

Melbourne spectator sports

Melbourne is one of the world’s premier sports destinations, with major events running year round. Etihad Stadium, near the Docklands, hosts A-league soccer and the wildly popular Australian Rules Football (AFL). Every January, Melbourne Park stages tennis’ Australian Open. But the most hallowed venue is Melbourne Cricket Ground (or MCG). This Yarra Park facility is home to Test Match cricket, soccer, AFL and rugby matches, as well as the National Sports Museum.

Dining in Melbourne

Melbourne’s multicultural population enjoys a restaurant scene with cuisines from around the globe. Chinatown has an affordable mix of Thai, Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian spots. Carlton has its own Little Italy along Lygon Street, and Fitzroy is the place for Mediterranean and Turkish eats. Seafood lovers head for suburban St. Kilda, a beach town on the bay.

Excursions near Melbourne

Melbourne has more than enough to keep you busy, but it’s worth a day trip out of town to drive the scenic Great Ocean Road. This 150-mile strip hugs the craggy coastline, with opportunities to stop and explore along the way. Highlights include watching the surfers at Torquay’s Bells Beach; Lorne’s bustling Qdos Arts Center; the rainforests and waterfalls at Great Otway National Park; and the dramatic 12 Apostles, towering limestone rock stacks rising out of the Southern Ocean.

Sleeping on a Cloud!
By Ruby Slippers
This being my first visit to the hotel I lashed out to include the club international as part of the package. I found the offering in the lounge a little light on in terms of food available and not [More] really value for money. Staff were always pleasant, but I didn’t receive information about the lounge such as when it was open, what was available. My room, any other services or information I would need to know especially since I had never stayed before. People stay at 5-star hotels for various reasons; some for business, some for a special treat to experience what luxury is like. My reason was to spend time with my terminally ill mother and treat her to an amazing getaway experience. The Intercontinental is a lovely hotel, that has the most amazing comfortable beds you can imagine (this was the highlight) but I found it to be a little cold not in temperature but atmosphere. I felt the hotel was suited to more the business traveler, it lacked feeling and warmth. On a positive we had an issue with our air conditioning in our room and that was promptly sorted out with a room change that was better than our existing room which I appreciated very much. The offering for the In-Room dining was diverse and delicious and since it came from the restaurants downstairs I would recommend them as well. At a 5 Star hotel, I love arriving in my room to see what’s included that makes it so special. Smell the shampoos, see what goodies have been included. 1 bottle of complimentary water between two people is a little stingy, 1 glass in the bathroom for rinsing your mouth, normally it should be two. Small things matter, like how to operate the curtains, or that turn down service isn’t a guarantee you have to request it, this could be covered off during check in especially if you ask one simple question, have you stayed with us before? If you have, then you know how the hotel works, you know your way around and you know where things are. It’s an attractive hotel for the right occasion and we did had a lovely stay. Did I mention the beds? they are truly amazing and if I could I would buy one for my mum. [Less]
Awesome Experience
By Nic42k
We were in Melbourne for a birthday weekend and thanks to Intercontinental Melbourne they sure delivered in making it a very memorable time. At the front entrance we were greeted by the porter and [More] escorted to reception. Checking Inn was a breeze and everyone was so friendly. We upgraded to a junior suite and the room was amazing with lots of character and very spacious. The club room as one of the best we have been to and the staff were absolutely incredible. This will now be a favourite hotel in Melbourne and we can hardly wait to visit again. A massive congratulations to management and staff. We highly recommend this hotel. Nick [Less]
Weekend in Melbourne

Stay Sat 11th Oct to Mon 13th Upgraded to Cub Room on arrival. Great room with balcony overlooking inside of hotel. Huge room, great bathroom, very clean and quite. Club served great evening snacks [More] and no lack of alcoholic drinks served by very efficient staff. 1st morning had breakfast in downstairs restaurant, good but not great. 2nd day had a wonderful breakfast in the Club. Chef on hand to make any style of egg dish required. Again very capable staff made for an enjoyable start to the day. Didn't use the Lounge Bar, but it did look very inviting. Hotel is in the business end of the CBD but was only a short 10 min walk to main shopping areas of the city. Hotel was very clean throughout. Staff very polite and friendly. My wife and I normally stay in hotels at the top end of Collins street, which is a little better located for shopping and Theatres. However the experience, cleanliness, room size and a better Club. will most definitely have us staying at the Intercontinental when next we visit Melbourne [Less]
