Villahermosa, Spanish for “beautiful village”, is the capital of the state of Tabasco. This oil-rich city was once the center of the Olmec Civilization—the first Mesoamerican civilization. Home to a majority of Tabasco’s population, Villahermosa is quickly becoming a modernized, business-centric city while maintaining the historic roots of both the Olmec and Mayan Civilizations. You will find shopping malls, several museums, parks, and a vivid urban culture all in one city.
Things to See
Zona Remodelada, or “La Zona” as the locals call it, is home to several attractions. You can stop by the gallery and café inside the “Never-dying house”, La Casa Siempreviva, which has been restored and painted in bright pinks and purples. The main square boasts live entertainment in the cool evenings and has spectacular views of the Grijalva River. You’ll also find the Museo de Historia (History Museum) in La Zona, where you can learn about the ancient history of Tabasco. The must-see Parque-Museo La Venta combines a museum, zoo and park into one destination. A large cieba, the sacred tree of the Olmec and Mayan Civilizations, is rooted outside the museum at the beginning of the trails that lead you through the native landscapes. Along the trails, you will find large stone figures, including the historic basalt heads. Other artifacts are housed in the Museo Regional de Antroplogia, dating back to the Stone Age and through the Aztec Period.
