The Premises

Lakeside La Réserve Eden au Lac Zürich has had more than a hundred years to perfect its hospitality, so you know you’re in safe hands. Zürich’s one and only five-star hotel right beside the waterfront woos with classically beautiful architecture, wonderful staff and delicious cuisine, from inventive Peruvian-Asian fusion fare to grilled-to-succulent-perfection Mediterranean dishes. Sensibly, the hotel called upon a certain Philippe Starck to cast a spell upon the interiors: a sophisticated symphony of neutral hues, splashes of blue and nautical, lake-honouring accents. Take the hint from the views yielded by the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows and duck out every now and then for liquid adventures and prime people-watching.

Don’t forget your deck shoes and diamonds.

Little Smiths are welcome. Babysitting can be arranged with two days’ notice (€50 an hour; two-hour minimum).

In-room beauty treatments can be arranged on request. Communal spaces and some of the hotel’s rooms are suitable for wheelchair users.
Other Smith-approved members of the lavish La Réserve clan include La Réserve Ramatuelle and La Réserve Genève.

Thanks to a certain chap by the name of Philippe Starck, all 40 rooms are utterly winsome. Be sure to request one with lake views (only a quarter of the hotel’s rooms come without). Pale, muted hues, nautical-inspired Jatoba wood, papyrus-like wallpaper, striking sinks and exposed brick are just a few of the noteworthy design details.

Unforgettable Features

Thanks to its lofty top-floor perch and pretty outdoor terrace, La Muña restaurant comes with dazzling views of Lake Zürich and the white-cloaked peaks of the Swiss Alps. Divide your admiration between the scenery and the ambitious Peruvian-Asian fusion fare. La Muña only has space for 35 lucky bottoms, making for additional smugness. There’s more room at the hotel’s downstairs charmer, the Eden Kitchen & Bar, which is rightly proud of its custom-made grill that turns out delicious Meditteranean-inspired dishes with just the right amount of char.

Liquid Bliss

Stay put at the Eden Kitchen & Bar for tasty tipples. An ice-cold Swiss white wine or classic cocktail seems appropriate…

Experience the Extraordinary

Having relaxed in the splendour of your room, explored the smoking room and cellar, enjoyed delicious meals in the restaurants and indulged in an in-room spa treatment or two, consider heading outside. A five-minute stroll along the promenade brings you to the Opera House, for example… Hop into Zürich on Alex, the hotel’s handy houseboat, and spend a day gadding around Switzerland’s largest city. Have a massage or beauty treatment starring Swissline lotions and potions or create your own custom cocktails at the dapper hotel bar. Budding Willy Wonkas can join a chocolate-factory tour at one of Switzerland’s famous chocolateries: try the Lindt & Sprüngli Chocolateria in nearby Kilchberg, a 20-minute drive from Zürich. (If you’d rather stroll to your cacao hit, head to one of Zürich’s chocolate havens, such as Läderach on Bahnhofstrasse, Max Chocolatier on Schlüsselgasse or Confiserie Sprüngli on Paradeplatz.) See Zürich from the water by embarking on a genteel boat tour with local company Hensa. In summer, hire boats or enjoy watersports galore on the shimmering lake. For an easy hike, tick off Zürich’s ‘house mountain’, Uetliberg, which rewards explorers with beautiful views of the city, lake and Alps. Brave the tourists (they’re there for good reason) and explore Zürich’s chocolate-box pretty city centre, especially Niederdorf and Oberdorf, where fondue restaurants vie for space with sweet shops and souvenir stalls.

Enjoying a lakeside location, the hotel is sitting pretty on Zürich's genteel Seebad Utoquai, a 10-minute walk from the Bahnhofstrasse shopping street.

Zurich Airport is a 20-minute drive away, served by international carriers such as British Airways, EasyJet, Swiss and more. The hotel can arrange transfers (€120 each way).

Stadelhofen rail station is seven minutes away by car, with services connecting to major cities in Switzerland and Europe.

It takes 45 minutes to drive from Lucerne to the hotel. On-site parking costs CHF35 a night. Possible day-trip destinations include Lucerne, Rhine Falls and the eastern Swiss Alps.
