The Little things can make or break

By

August 29, 2019

It’s the little things that can make your stay a good stay or a bad stay. I travel a lot for work so I’m familiar with staying in hotels and what makes a good or bad experience. I was going to be staying at this hotel for two weeks, so I was in for a long stay at this hotel. I’ll start by saying the staff was the best part of the stay. They were all very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate me. That said it was all the little things that ruined the stay for me.

First thing, the front door is not a sliding door it was a door with handle and latch. I had a large piece of luggage and coming up to the door I was surprised that he door was a latched door and not a sliding door. A sliding door would have been nice and convenient for travelers with less than three hands. Trying to fiddle with opening the door only to find a second handled door to get to the front desk with all my luggage was a chore. Most if not all the hotels I stay at have sliding doors at the front.

Hotel Layout. The layout was such that the front desk is on one end of the hotel. If you get a room at the other end of the hotel be prepared to walk some distance to get back to the front desk, gym, business center, dinning area, basically everything. Most hotels have the front desk centered in the hotel so both ends of the building are equal distance from the front desk and amenities. Same goes for parking. There is limited parking around the building. If you get a room at the front of the building and the parking is full at the front of the building, you’ll be parking in the back of the building and going for very long walk back to the front of the building where your room is. Layout of this hotel is not ideal.

Room. The room was smaller than other hotels I’ve stayed at. For a Staybridge I was expecting a larger room. It was still nice but seemed a little dated from the white appliances and kitchen area. Bathroom was more modern but over all the room seems small and outdated. This was strange because the rest of the hotel is very modern and up to date, just not my room. Also, the dishwasher was the loudest dishwasher I've ever heard. If you plan on running the dishwasher just plan on spending the next hour some place other than your hotel room.

TV. The TV isn’t something I use much but I was going to be staying for two weeks. I was disappointed to find one of the smallest TV’s I’ve ever seen at a hotel in my room. The TV was maybe a 32” TV. Quite a bit smaller than what I’m use to at IHG hotels.

NOISE! This was my biggest complaint while I was there. The noise that permeated my room was almost unbearable. It completely ruined my experience at this hotel. After about the third day I was staying there I noticed that the person above me, (I stayed on second floor) when ever they walked around their room it sounded like they were stomping around. It was loud enough to wake me up from sleeping any time they walked around. One afternoon about the fifth day I was there I heard drilling and other loud noises coming from the room above me. I called down to the front desk and they relayed that there was remodeling going on above my room and said they would tell them to keep the noise down. After calling down I personally walked up there, and sure enough door was open and a cart full of tools, paint brushes etc., was sitting outside the room. While they did finish up that day on the construction, I was surprised that the staff would stick a long-term resident close to a room under construction. When the noise continued the next day, I went to the front desk to ask if the construction has ended and why I was still hearing stomping above my room. I was a little annoyed when the manager tried to say there hadn’t been any remodeling above me the day before and said there was guest staying in that room. I asked when the guest checked in and he say the just night before. I told him that I had personally seen the remodeling cart outside the room the day before. Once he knew I was already aware of the situation he tried to change tactics and asked if I wanted to change rooms. I explained that I was not excited at the prospect of re-packing two week’s worth of cloths and moving to another room where results might be the same. I decided to not move, take my chances and see if the noise level improved. It did not. I continued to hear stomping at all times including the middle of the night. To quantify the intensity of the stomping, while lying in bed trying to sleep, my bed would slightly shake whenever the person above me walked around their room. I also could hear snoring through the walls. My sleep really suffered as I was continually hearing the stomping throughout the two weeks I was staying there, and it was always waking me up. I’ve never had this type of experience when staying at a hotel of this caliber.

Normally I’m not one to complain and have enough hotel experience under my belt to know what to expect from a hotel stay. I travel to Houston often, but I will not be staying at this hotel in the future. Also, I would not recommend this hotel to others unless the location is an absolute necessity. In my experience there are better options out there. I will say again the staff was great. Many of the items above are things out of their control but I still felt travelers should be aware of when considering this hotel.

Great Experience

By

October 09, 2014

My wife and I had just driven with a 20' truck, tow trailer, 2 dogs and another car straight through to Houston from Atlanta. When we arrived, the staff was pleasant, the room was perfectly clean and parking was available for our "caravan".

Even though this is a pet-friendly hotel, the cleaning crew does an outstanding job of insuring that the space is clean and odor-free. Even though we are dog owners, my wife is allergic to most dogs. She had no issue in the room for 2 nights.

The property is beautiful and overall the experience with Starbridge was excellent.

The 2 br suite was great for our visit with our grownup kid during a medical trip. Liked the close by jogging trail, and restaurants. Nice staff.
