“Remember the Alamo!” See the historic site that began as a mission in 1700 and later became the site of the famous battle that helped found the state. It’s a little over 50 miles away in San Antonio and is free to the public. For a bit of classic old-school “local roadside attraction,” try the Snake Farm Zoo. For younger children, McKenna Children’s Museum is a good bet.

New Braunfels is the closest city to the resort and blends its strong German heritage with the charm of Texas Hill Country. Walk its quaint Gruene Historic District to sightsee, shop, enjoy music, and dine on authentic German cuisine. Comal River offers relaxing tubing, and Schlitterbahn indoor-outdoor waterpark is a lot of fun for the whole family.

As Canyon Lake is a big water and nature recreation retreat for southern Texas, be sure to take advantage of the many great outdoor activities in the area. One favorite activity of locals and guests alike is tubing, such as on Guadalupe River, less than six miles from the resort, or Comal River in New Braunsfel.

It can get hot in the summer so water tubing is a popular activity and can get crowded. River levels can fluctuate in the Guadalupe River and become shallow, so plan your trip accordingly. Weekdays are best to help avoid the crowds. Also, make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks before tubing, and don’t forget the sunscreen!
