Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name was changed to Auburn University, a title more reflecting the location, and expressing the varied varied academic programs.

Gogue Performing Arts Center

The Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center at Auburn University, a new 85,000-square-foot venue that provides a space for touring Broadway productions; opera, dance, orchestra and symphony performances; and student and faculty music and theater performances. There will be seating for 1,200 guests in the main multipurpose venue, a box office, a catering kitchen, wardrobe and dressing rooms and office spaces. A second small performance venue will be connected to an outdoor amphitheater.
