Athens is a city-county in northeast Georgia, located about 70 miles from Atlanta. It's home to the University of Georgia, which is the state's flagship public research university. Athens is also the county seat of Clarke County and the sixth-largest city in Georgia with more than 115,000 residents. The city's climate is similar to the rest of the Southeast, categorized by mild to moderately cold winters and humid, warm summers. Some snowfall might occur during the winter.
Learn more about Athen's horticulture at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, a public collection of plants native to the area, along with trails on which you can walk and explore the land. Another top attraction is the Georgia Museum of Art, a long-running university art space with all types of exhibits on display. The city also houses several historic landmarks, including a Civil War-era double-barreled cannon, as well as a few monuments.
You'll find plenty of IHG hotel properties across Athens, offering comfortable accommodations at reasonable nightly rates. Choose a hotel in the university area if you plan to attend an event at the University of Georgia, or opt for lodging in downtown Athens if you want to take advantage of the area's nightlife. Some hotels are all-suite properties with extra space and separate living areas.
The closest airport to Athens is the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located nearly 70 miles away. The city encourages alternate transportation by offering bike lanes on most major roads. Public bus service is available via Athens Transit.
