Situated on the southeastern tip of the Virginia Peninsula and 16 miles north of Norfolk, Virginia, Hampton is a coastal city known for its history and beaches. If you're planning a getaway here, you'll find there's plenty to see and do.
When you want to hit the beach in Hampton, head to Buckroe Beach and Park. This oceanside park offers access to three-quarters of a mile of clean beach. You'll also enjoy picnic sites, a playground, kayak and paddleboat rentals and a stage pavilion.
To learn more about the history of the area, you can't miss a visit to Fort Monroe National Monument. This decommissioned military installation is situated right on the tip of the peninsula, and, along with Fort Wool, it guarded the channel into the Chesapeake Bay. Although defensive fortifications were built starting in 1609, the actual fort wasn't completed until 1834. Today you can tour the fort and learn more about the conflicts it saw throughout its history.
While there are a handful of hotels in downtown Hampton, you'll find the majority of options to the west of the city. Hampton has hotels that range from affordable to mid-range. This means you'll be able to find a hotel in your price range that offers the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
If you want to drive to Hampton, Interstate 64 runs directly through the heart of the city. If you'd prefer to fly to the area, Norfolk International Airport is located 14 miles south of the city.
