Madison is the capital of and second-largest city in Wisconsin with over 250,000 residents. It was founded on an isthmus between two lakes, Mendota and Monona, in 1829. The city is well-known for its proximity to those lakes, as well as housing the University of Wisconsin. It is an outdoor-friendly place with an extensive network of bike trails and parks, much of which was designed by landscape architect John Nolen. The climate in Madison is similar to the rest of the state, with frigid winters and moderate to heavy snowfall followed by warm, humid summers.
Madison played an important role during the Civil War, serving as a center for the Union Army within the state. As a result, there are several monuments dedicated to this period in history. One of the top attractions is the Wisconsin State Capitol, where visitors can take tours and learn more about the local government. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, which includes 16 acres of gardens. The Henry Vilas Zoo is a free attraction with exhibits housing animals from across the globe.
No matter what brings you to Madison, it's easy to find an IHG hotel property close to the area in which you plan to spend your time. Several IHG locations sit close to the University of Wisconsin campus. You can also find hotels offering amenities like indoor swimming pools, in-room kitchens, free breakfasts, and other helpful extras.
The Dane County Regional Airport is the closest option for air travel, serving nearly 1.6 million passengers every year. Passenger train service is available between Madison and Chicago, while regional bus lines provide transportation within the city.
