Visit Independence National Historic Park, where you’ll find historical attractions like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and adopted). No visit to Philadelphia is complete without seeing these iconic landmarks, in addition to Benjamin Franklin’s gravesite. This may seem odd, but pennies are thrown onto his tomb as a tribute to his famous words, “a penny saved, is a penny earned.”
Art lovers must make a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is home to a vast collection of artworks spanning different eras and cultures. Don't forget to run up the famous steps out front just like Rocky Balboa did in the 1976 drama film.
Other wonderful museums and concert halls include the Barnes Foundation (with an impressive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art, as well as African and Native American art), the Franklin Institute (a hands-on science museum with interactive exhibits), the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (a renowned venue, which hosts concerts, theater, and dance performances), and the Academy of Music (where you can witness a breathtaking performance by the Opera Philadelphia).
The city is known for its vibrant murals. Take a guided tour to learn more about the stories and artists behind them. And be sure to stop by the Magic Gardens, an outdoor mosaic sculpture garden created by artist Isaiah Zagar.
Need to touch the grass? Philadelphia is full of green spaces. A few favorites include Fairmount Park (one of the largest urban park systems in the country, offering trails, picnic areas, and scenic views), Spruce Street Harbor Park (a seasonal park featuring hammocks, floating gardens, and food vendors along the Delaware River), and Rittenhouse Square in the heart of the city (perfect for people-watching and enjoying a picnic). Featuring over 1,300 animals and innovative exhibits, the Philadelphia Zoo was the first zoo in the United States.
