Nestled along the edge of the Black Hills National Forest, Rapid City is the quintessential South Dakota vacation stop, offering an eclectic blend of Old West history and grandeur. Explore the area's natural beauty, historic landmarks and other attractions as you plan your visit to Rapid City.
Known as the gateway to Mount Rushmore, Rapid City is just a short drive from one of the country's most famous attractions. When you're visiting Rushmore, don't forget to stop by the Crazy Horse Memorial. Although in its infancy, this rock-carved sculpture will rival the beauty of Rushmore when it's completed. If you're in the mood for some outdoorsy activities, head to the Black Hills. Hike, bike or take a scenic drive through the park. You should also head to the Badlands, east of Rapid City. Used as a Martian landscape in 50s sci-fi films, the Badlands offers views you won't find anywhere else on Earth.
Rapid City has plenty of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. Stay in the heart of the city in a historic hotel to wander the streets of downtown, or choose a bed and breakfast for a charming, romantic vacation. Further out from the center of town, cabins and other lodgings are available that allow you to visit the city and the wilderness quickly and easily.
Rapid City is a rather remote place, and getting to it may be difficult depending on where you're coming from. The Rapid City Regional Airport is just 10 miles from the city. By car, Rapid City is just off I-90, but the closest major city is Billings, just over 300 miles northwest.
