Wilmington is the county seat of New Hanover County and a port city in North Carolina. More than 117,000 people call this city home, which sits in the center of the county and on the southeast coast. It is a major center for TV and film production, thanks to the presence of EUE/Screen Gems Studios. This studio is the largest production facility outside of California and has produced hits such as “Iron Man 3” and “One Tree Hill.” Four beaches are within a half-hour of Wilmington, making it a top destination for a relaxing seafront vacation.
Spending some time at the beach is a must when visiting Wilmington. The top beaches include Carolina, Wrightsville and Kure Beaches, along with Fort Fisher. Visitors can learn more about World War II on the historic battleship USS North Carolina, which contains a museum with exhibits. Another top spot to visit is Airlie Gardens, an enormous outdoor space with lakes and flowers. Kids will love seeing Cape Fear Serpentarium, an indoor zoo featuring snakes and other reptiles.
It's easy to find a romantic IHG hotel property with a beautiful view or an IHG hotel near the downtown area, offering easier access to shopping and dining. Some hotels are also near beaches. Amenities available at some hotels include swimming pools, fitness centers and free daily breakfast.
When traveling to Wilmington, check for flights into Wilmington International Airport. Public transit is also available via the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority, which includes shuttles, a free downtown trolley and bus routes.
